Lisa Merala Testimony, Roseville NW Curves

My past: I’ve never been considered “skinny” or athletic, and I’ve always had to watch my weight. In high school and college, I played lacrosse and field hockey more for the camaraderie than the exercise or competition. Then, I graduated from college and recognized that I needed to exercise to manage my weight, so I took some aerobics classes. I got hooked, and soon started teaching aerobics. I was fit, but still not skinny

When my career started growing at HP and I decided to go back to school for my MBA, I stopped teaching aerobics and exercising. Working over 40 hours a week, taking 6 credits each quarter year-round, and studying more than 20 hours a week, I never knew when I would get my next meal, so I ate poorly. I slowly gained weight every year for the past 10 years. I participated in a weight management program, but I didn’t see the results I had hoped.

A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). It wasn’t severe, but it bothered me. I also had trouble sleeping and dealing with stress at work. In addition, I was unhappy with my body image. I wanted to learn how to take control of these issues, but none of these issues were life threatening.

My insignificant turning point: One day at work, I received an email offering a year subscription to a fitness center. I really didn’t like the fitness center itself, but the email caused me to consider a fitness program. My husband had joined a fitness center a month earlier, and I could see his stress level decrease. So, I contacted 3 fitness centers and inquired about their programs. So, most people have some life-changing event that causes them to change. For me, I guess something just clicked in my mind and I actually listened to it. So, while my impetus was insignificant in comparison to others, it was enough for me to do something different.

My reason for joining Curves: I was most impressed with Curves for the following reasons. First and foremost, I was unhappy with my body image and wanted to focus on losing weight, gaining strength and stamina, rather than worry about how I looked in front of everyone at a fitness center. Second, I wanted a program that was efficient and easy to follow. Third, I wanted staff support through the process. So, I joined Curves March 12, 2009. Two days later, I attended the Weight Management class for Phases 1 and 2. And, I started the Curves SMART program a week after joining.

I really liked the Curves concept of an efficient and complete exercise program, weight management plan, and supplements. The other program I followed was not sustainable, nor did it truly focus on a comprehensive approach.

My 1st month experience:
I have to admit, I was skeptical. I didn’t think it was important or helpful to strength train or take supplements along with weight management and aerobic exercise. But, I figured “what have I got to lose except the weight I don’t want”, so I followed the program. At first, I was overwhelmed. Having to add strength training, walk every day, count calories, plan meals, write in my food journal, and take supplements every day seemed almost too much to follow. But, I persevered for the first month knowing that habits only form over time. I saw results. Wow, what a motivator! With the economy and my 401K tanking, I felt like I actually had control over something in my life.

My present:
Now, I’ve been at Curves for an entire year. It’s been a journey. I’ve changed my lifestyle. I feel better about myself. I watch nutritional information, eat healthy, and actually don’t feel hungry or crave the unhealthy foods anymore (my weakness was sugar). I no longer take medication for GERD. I sleep better and can manage stress at work. I even lost weight during my Achilles tendon injury!

I look forward to my Curves workouts. I work out 5-6 days a week now (it’s addictive). I just surpassed my 200th workout. I burn 460 calories on average. I regularly attend the weight management classes for reinforcement and accountability. I feel better than I have in a long time. I don’t think I’ve been this small since college. I’ve lost 69 pounds and 65 inches. Depending on the make and cut, I’m wearing size 4, and even size 2 and 0. People actually call me skinny!

My future:
The program has become a habit now. I know I will I stick with this sustainable healthy lifestyle. I’m nearly at my goal weight of 115 pounds. I look forward to maintenance and Phase 3 and know how to manage small corrections. I recognize what causes me to eat (stress) and how to manage (set goals). As I reach my weight goal, I’ve started investigating my next goal. I’m looking forward to the summer season and actually wearing a 2 piece bathing suit!

The best part is that I’ve made friends who support me in my goals here at Curves. I hope I have inspired others in their weight loss journey. I look forward to continuing this mission. Please feel free to ask me how I can help.
