My journey for fitness became much easier and more enjoyable than ever before when I plugged into the Curves program about 18 months ago. In the midst of my late forties, the usual jogging and walking was not keeping my body toned nor was it reducing the extra 25 pounds I was toting around after childbirth (7 years earlier).

Enter Curves! The first three months, I faithfully exercised 3-4 times per week. I noticed changes in fitness within 4-6 weeks. My stairs at home were a breeze to run up and down and my legs no longer ached when I reached the top! I knew I was achieving part of my goal. But, my weight and inches had not budged. However, I focused on my improved fitness level and stayed positive.

Then, my Curves offered a 6 week Challenge class. I did not have the frame of mind to change my eating habits FOREVER. Six weeks of intake discipline, however, did seem like an achievable CHALLENGE. The 6 weeks "changed" my life you might say in getting a handle on eating habits and how I viewed myself. As part of the challenge, you set a goal. Mine was to lose 10 pounds. The 12 pounds I lost was a fine reward. The 6 weeks set me on track and I continued my weight loss to my young adult/intended weight. I have since lost a total of 30 pounds and 10 years! I feel great and youthful. I cannot praise Curves enough for these classes. Setting a short-term goal was the tool for me. The added bonus is the sense of community, belonging and working together towards common goals that Folsom Curves offers all of its members.

Simply put, I love Curves because they have helped me to love myself again. The atmosphere is one of encouragement and camaraderie. I don't feel self-conscious, out-of-place or alone in my weight struggle. I can now look at my goals and self body image in positive terms.

I once read that at the moment you say, "I give up", someone else seeing the same situation is saying, "My, what a great opportunity". Curves fosters the philosophy of "what a great opportunity", for putting our health on the right track and at a pace that is not overwhelming. I can now admit that good health does not happen overnight, but with hard work and good attitude, it can be accomplished.

I love Curves! This is the fitness program that I was looking for. It is quick, easy and effective. The hours are flexible and I have been able to attend on a regular basis in spite of my busy schedule. After a workout, I always feel an energy surge and am ready for the rest of the day.

I also have enjoyed meeting and chatting with many of my Folsom neighbors. An added bonus: getting together with my sister every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We both started the program in March 2002 and plan to continue indefinitely. By the way, I am 71 and my sister Rose is 83!
